If you're planning a Studio D2D wedding in Grand Rapids...

One of the biggest advantages of this venue is how easy it is to build a wedding day around it.

From the easy to access location right off the expressway, ample parking, gorgeous natural lighting, Studio D2D has a LOT to offer!

I've photographed several weddings at Studio D2D and am also one of their preferred wedding photography vendors, (WHOOP WHOOP!) so I've gotten to know the space very well - where the light works, how the day tends to flow, and when it makes sense to stay on-site versus sneaking away into downtown Grand Rapids for portraits.

And while every wedding I've photographed here has looked completely different, that's part of what makes Studio D2D work so well. You have a versatile space to start with, without being locked into one particular wedding-day aesthetic.

Getting Married at Studio D2D in Grand Rapids

Studio D2D is centrally located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, just off US-131, and offers couples an easy, all-in-one wedding experience. Between their trusted vendor list and on-site options - from tuxedo rentals to florals by Poppy and Posy Designs - there are plenty of ways to simplify the planning process and keep everything connected.

One of the biggest advantages of Studio D2D is its versatility. The venue gives you a beautiful blank slate to build around your own vision rather than having your wedding dictated by an existing style.

And your entire day doesn't have to happen in one place. Whether you're planning a ceremony at your family church, somewhere meaningful to the two of you, or right at Studio D2D, you have plenty of flexibility to create a wedding day that feels like yours while keeping the reception conveniently located in Grand Rapids.

The Loft vs. City View at Studio D2D

Studio D2D offers two different wedding spaces The Loft and City View and while both can accommodate up to 225 guests for a ceremony and 300 for a reception, they each have their own personality.

The Loft

Located on the first floor, The Loft has more of an elegant-meets-industrial feel. Vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, hardwood floors and huge windows give the space tons of character while still leaving plenty of room to make it your own.

From a photography perspective, those expansive windows are a huge bonus. The natural light gives us plenty to work with throughout the day, while the exposed beams, chandeliers and fairy lights completely change the feeling of the room once the reception gets going.

The Loft also has separate ceremony and reception spaces, which makes the transition between the two incredibly easy without needing to move your guests to another location.

And that hardwood dance floor underneath the chandeliers and twinkle lights? So damn good once the party starts.

City View

Head up to the third floor and City View gives you a completely different experience.

The standout here is obviously the downtown Grand Rapids skyline, visible through the huge picture windows. You still get the hardwood floors, exposed beams, chandeliers and warm twinkle lights Studio D2D is known for, but the city backdrop gives this room its own look.

City View also offers separate ceremony and reception areas, so you can host your entire celebration in one place while still creating some separation between different parts of the day.

Both spaces photograph beautifully - they just give you two very different ways to build a Studio D2D wedding around the atmosphere you want.

Getting Ready at Studio D2D

Another advantage of keeping your wedding at Studio D2D is having getting-ready spaces available right at the venue.

From a photography standpoint, this makes the beginning of the day significantly easier. Your details, wedding party, ceremony space and reception are all close by, which means less time coordinating travel and more time actually documenting what's happening.

The getting-ready spaces also give us some beautiful opportunities for those early parts of the story - the finishing touches, details, everyone hanging out before the ceremony and all of those little interactions that happen before the day really gets moving.

If you're planning to get ready on-site, I always recommend having your important details gathered together before photography begins. Invitations, rings, jewelry, shoes, florals and anything sentimental can all be photographed first without interrupting the rest of your morning.

Wedding Photo Locations at Studio D2D

You definitely don't have to leave Studio D2D to create a wedding gallery with variety.

Between the getting-ready suites, expansive windows, industrial architecture, exposed beams and outdoor areas surrounding the venue, there are plenty of options just a few steps away.

Having photographed several weddings here also means I'm not walking in on your wedding day trying to figure out where everything photographs best. I know where to look for great window light, which areas work well for larger wedding parties, and where we can sneak away for couples portraits without turning it into a production.

And because the light changes throughout the day, the exact same area can give us something completely different a few hours later.

That's part of the fun.

Want a Different Look? Downtown Grand Rapids Is Nearby

One of the perks of Studio D2D's location is that if you do want a completely different look for part of your wedding gallery, downtown Grand Rapids isn't far away.

Within a relatively small area, we can add city streets, modern architecture and a more polished downtown feel without turning portrait time into a tour of West Michigan.

One location I especially love is Lyons Square, right outside the Amway Grand Plaza.

It's one of my go-to downtown locations because we can create plenty of variety without spending all of our time walking or driving between backgrounds.

You can see an entirely different side of Lyons Square in this downtown Grand Rapids anniversary session, where we used the same area for an elevated couples session - and a celebratory champagne spray.

Whether heading downtown makes sense for your wedding really comes down to the look you want and how you'd like to spend your time. It's simply another option we have when building the day around what's important to you.

Planning Your Studio D2D Wedding Photography Timeline

One advantage of having your ceremony, reception and potentially even getting-ready coverage at Studio D2D is that your photography timeline can stay relatively simple.

How much time you'll need depends on whether you're doing a first look, where you're getting ready, your ceremony time, family-photo needs and whether you'd like to incorporate an off-site location.

Having photographed several weddings here means I already know what we can realistically accomplish at the venue and how much additional time we'll need if you want to head downtown.

Working With a Studio D2D Preferred Photographer

After photographing several weddings here, familiarity is one of the biggest advantages I can offer my couples.

I don't have to spend your wedding day figuring out the venue for the first time.

I know the space. I know what we can accomplish without leaving it. I know when going downtown is worth the extra time and when it probably isn't.

Being included on Studio D2D's preferred vendor list is something I genuinely appreciate because it means couples finding me through the venue can work with someone who already understands the space and how a wedding day functions there.

But knowing the venue is only part of it.

My approach to every wedding is a mix of documentary photography and thoughtful direction. I'll step in when you need help, find beautiful light, keep portraits moving and make sure we have the photographs that tell the story of your wedding day.
