If you're looking for a Grand Rapids wedding venue that's a little unexpected, the Grand Rapids Public Museum is easily one of the most unique places to get married downtown.
I’ve photographed weddings at the museum, and this isn't a venue where you're working with one ballroom and trying to make it look different all day. You have floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Grand River, historic exhibits, the carousel, the streets of old Grand Rapids, the museum architecture itself, AND downtown right outside the doors.
There is a lot to work with here.
And once the museum closes to the public and becomes your wedding venue? It feels completely different.
Getting Married at the Grand Rapids Public Museum
Located at 272 Pearl St NW in downtown Grand Rapids, the Grand Rapids Public Museum sits directly along the Grand River.
One of my favorite things about a Grand Rapids Public Museum wedding is that the venue itself becomes part of the experience.
Your guests aren't just walking into a ballroom for dinner. They're celebrating inside an actual museum, surrounded by exhibits and pieces of Grand Rapids history.
For couples who want their wedding to feel fun, interesting, and completely different from a traditional wedding venue, this one is hard to beat.
Grand Rapids Public Museum Wedding Ceremony
You have two VERY different options for an indoor wedding ceremony at the museum.
The Meijer Theater seats up to 255 guests and gives you a more traditional theater-style ceremony with full audiovisual capabilities.
Or you can literally get married under the stars inside the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium, which seats up to 147 guests.
Yes.
Your wedding ceremony can happen in a planetarium.
Tell me that isn't cool.
Both options also mean you're not depending on Michigan weather cooperating for your ceremony — which, as someone who photographs weddings here all year, I consider a pretty solid perk.
A Wedding Reception Inside the Museum
After the ceremony, the museum transforms into your reception space.
The first floor includes the Galleria and dance floor along with access to museum exhibits, and can accommodate up to 275 guests for a seated reception.
And this is where the Grand Rapids Public Museum really separates itself from a typical wedding venue.
Your guests can actually explore.
Instead of cocktail hour being everyone standing around the same room waiting for dinner, they're inside a museum.
That alone makes the night feel like an experience.
The Carousel!
I can't talk about a Grand Rapids Public Museum wedding without talking about the 1928 Spillman Carousel.
It's one of the most recognizable parts of the museum — and obviously, we're taking photos there.
The carousel gives you something completely different from your traditional wedding portraits and brings a little bit of movement, color, and FUN into your gallery.
And that's really what I love about photographing here.
Your wedding photos can go from romantic portraits overlooking the river to something completely ridiculous and joyful on a nearly 100-year-old carousel.
Your gallery gets variety without needing to leave the building.

We're already downtown.
The museum's location gives us easy access to the Grand River, Blue Bridge, downtown architecture, and plenty of portrait locations without turning your wedding day into a tour of Grand Rapids.
That matters to me.
I don't think you need to disappear from your wedding for two hours just to get beautiful photos.
Give me a little pocket of time, a good location, and the two of you actually enjoying yourselves.
Then go back to your wedding.
The museum gives us plenty to work with both inside and immediately around the venue, which means we can create variety without sacrificing your entire cocktail hour to photos.
Why I Love Photographing Weddings at the Grand Rapids Public Museum
From a photography perspective, this place is FUN.
There are huge windows and beautiful natural light during the day, city and river views outside, historic exhibits inside, the carousel, interesting architecture, and completely different lighting once the reception begins.
But more than that, there's always something happening.
Your guests are exploring.
People are interacting with exhibits.
Someone is inevitably doing something ridiculous.
Then the lights go down, flash comes out, everyone hits the dance floor, and suddenly the museum has an entirely different personality.
That's exactly the kind of wedding I love photographing.
