A Wedding at The Casnovia Barn in West Michigan
There are wedding venues that photograph beautifully from one angle, and then there are spaces that give you something new every time you turn around. The Casnovia Barn is the latter.
Located in Casnovia, Michigan, just outside the Grand Rapids area, The Casnovia Barn combines open countryside and apple-country views with a modern, elevated approach to the traditional Michigan barn wedding. The property includes both indoor and outdoor spaces, with the main barn offering soaring ceilings, statement chandeliers, white oak floors and an elegant neutral interior that can take on an entirely different personality depending on how a wedding is designed.
I had the opportunity to photograph this wedding alongside LoHi photogtraphy, which gave me the chance to experience The Casnovia Barn from a photographer's perspective while also having a little extra freedom to explore the property creatively.
And there is a LOT to work with here.
Modern Architecture Meets Michigan Countryside
What immediately stood out to me about The Casnovia Barn was the contrast.
The architecture is clean and intentional, with white exteriors, black architectural details and a reception space that feels much more refined than what many couples picture when they hear “barn venue.” Then you step outside and you're surrounded by expansive green fields, orchards and open sky.
That contrast gives wedding photographs incredible variety without requiring couples to leave the property.
For this wedding, we photographed everything from clean architectural compositions around the venue to wide portraits in the surrounding landscape. The open property also gave us room to play with movement, the bride's veil and the dramatic Michigan sky.

The property gives you the ability to create both polished editorial portraits and photographs that feel much more spontaneous.
Inside The Casnovia Barn Reception Space
The reception space is one of the property's strongest features.
The main barn is more than 6,000 square feet and features 21-foot ceilings, large statement chandeliers, white oak hardwood floors and a neutral interior. The venue lists capacity for up to 275-300 seated guests, making it an option for couples planning a larger West Michigan wedding without sacrificing a polished atmosphere.
Why The Casnovia Barn Photographs So Well
From a photography perspective, what I loved most was the variety.
You have clean architecture, dark accents, open fields, enormous skies, greenery, indoor reception space and enough room to create environmental portraits where the couple doesn't have to fill the entire frame.
It allowed me to photograph this wedding with the documentary approach I naturally gravitate toward while also creating more intentional, editorial imagery when the setting called for it.
