In the heart of Badlands National Park, an unexpected ice storm set the stage for Jon and Brenna's intimate elopement—a celebration of love, family, and cherished memories. As a dedicated Michigan wedding photographer, I had the privilege of capturing the raw emotion and breathtaking visuals of this extraordinary day, blending nature's grandeur with heartfelt connections.

Why Badlands National Park Held Special Meaning

For Jon, Badlands National Park was more than just a stunning location—it was a place filled with sentimental value, closely tied to cherished memories of his father. Choosing the park for their elopement was a way to honor those memories while creating new ones in a place that held such profound meaning.

If you are planning a wedding or elopement at Badlands National Park, here are some helpful tips on fees that you should know about in advance! Your wedding and/or elopement permit will be separate from your entrance fee. You can buy your day pass upon entry, and it is usually about $30.00 per vehicle. The application fee for your wedding or elopement fee is usually around $100.00 and you will have to pay for that separately. You can find how to apply for your application online here!

A Personal Touch: Officiated by Family

Adding a deeply personal touch to the ceremony, Jon's sister, Jane, officiated their vows. Her heartfelt words brought an emotional depth that resonated with everyone present. This familial connection made the ceremony even more meaningful, reinforcing the bond between love and family.

About Badlands National Park

Badlands National Park, situated in southwestern South Dakota, is renowned for its striking rock formations and dramatic canyons. The vast expanse of towering rocks stretching for miles is truly awe-inspiring. Visitors often enjoy hiking, stargazing, and watching the stunning sunrises and sunsets here. Interestingly, Badlands is considered one of the premier national parks for stargazing in the United States! Some things to do while visiting Badlands National Park!

The park is also home to incredible wildlife, including bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and bison. During my visit, my friend and I spotted bison along the drive and countless prairie dogs scurrying about. Depending on the season and weather, there’s even a chance to witness the northern lights in Badlands National Park. I feel so lucky to have experienced this during our trip—it was absolutely breathtaking and a moment I’ll never forget.

Lodging for your elopement at Badlands

While planning your Badlands elopement, you will need a place to stay! The park offers several cabins and campgrounds within the park. In addition, there are plenty of lodging options outside the park as well. Rapid City (one of my favorite places to visit) is a city located outside of the park, and it is right at about 1-hour drive from the park. A lodging place that offers cabins for people to stay in at Badlands National Park, is called Cedar Pass Lodge! Their 2023 season dates last from 4/21/2023 – 10/23/2023. Be sure to check it out!
